What is Zakah?
Zakah is an obligatory form of giving for Muslims whose wealth meets the relevant conditions. It is a pillar of Islam, not simply a general donation. The Quran identifies categories of people who may receive it, including those who are poor or in need.
Understanding the obligation
Not everyone is required to pay Zakah. Whether it is due depends on the kind and amount of wealth and the conditions that apply. A short introduction cannot determine an individual’s obligation; seek knowledgeable guidance when working out what you owe and who may receive it.
Sadaqah: voluntary giving
Sadaqah is voluntary charity. It provides another way to help others and share what we have, beyond the specific obligation of Zakah.
Giving with care
Be clear about the purpose of your gift. A general community fundraiser is not automatically an eligible Zakah collection. Check how a donation will be used before designating it as Zakah.
