What is fasting?

Sawm, or fasting, is one of the five pillars of Islam. The Ramadan fast runs from dawn until sunset and includes abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations. There are recognised exceptions to the obligation; personal circumstances should be discussed with a knowledgeable adviser.

More than going without

Fasting encourages self-control, patience and reflection. Good conduct matters alongside the physical fast, including care in what we say and how we treat others.

A month of the Quran

Ramadan is closely connected with the revelation of the Quran. Muslims give particular attention to reading and reflecting on it, offering prayer and supporting those in need. Taraweeh are voluntary prayers offered at night during Ramadan.

The last ten nights

The final ten nights are a special time for worship and seeking Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree. Prayer, remembrance and generosity remain central throughout the month.
