Hajj: the fifth pillar
Hajj is the pilgrimage to Makkah and one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligation once in a lifetime for Muslims who are able to undertake it. Its rites follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and recall Ibrahim and his family.
A shared act of worship
Hajj takes place at a prescribed time. Its rites include gathering at Arafat, circling the Ka’bah and walking between Safa and Marwa. Muslims from many countries and backgrounds come together, united in worship.
What is Umrah?
Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah with fewer rites than Hajj. It can be performed at other times of the year. Completing Umrah does not replace the obligation of Hajj.

These are introductions, not step-by-step instructions for pilgrimage. Seek knowledgeable guidance about the rites and your circumstances. Some pilgrims also visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah; this visit is separate from the rites of Hajj.
